“It has to be realistic”, says Fernanda Torres about a possible Oscar nomination

The actress Fernanda Torres 59 years old, stated that his newest work, the film “I’m Still Here” has already exceeded its initial expectations. The film, directed by the filmmaker Walter Salles (“Central do Brasil” and “Motorcycle Diaries”), was chosen to represent Brazil in the competition for a place in the Best International Film category at the 2025 Oscars.

In the film, Fernanda plays Eunice Paiva, wife of engineer and former deputy Rubens Paiva, who was kidnapped during the Military Dictatorship and was never found again. In an interview with Culturize-se, during the premiere of the work at the prestigious London Film Festival, last Sunday (13), the star spoke about the possibility of an Oscar nomination.

“I think it looks like the top of the slope. I think it’s a very heavy industry and it’s already a miracle that we have the criticism we have, because it’s a small film for the world. It’s a film spoken in Portuguese. A film like this is already incredible that it is being chosen for so many festivals. We are at all the most important festivals in the world. We won an award today in Canada, we won a screenplay award in Venice, we were applauded. The criticisms are… I already think what’s happening is incredible.”

Based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, the film received a 10-minute standing ovation after its screening at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, and there are rumors that Fernanda may receive a nomination in the Best Actress category at the American awards.

“We have to be realistic, it is a very strong year for actresses. Just for me to be on the shortlist is already a miracle”, joked Fernanda, whose mother, actress Fernanda Montenegro, 94, was nominated in the same category in 1999, for “Central do Brasil”, but lost the statuette to Gwyneth Paltrow (“ Shakespeare in Love”).

The official list of Oscar nominees will be released on January 17th.
