«It hurts the sensitivity of the teachers». Liceo di Pisa denies the identity of a transgender student

«It hurts the sensitivity of the teachers». This is the absurd reason that led the Ulisse Dini high school in Pisa to deny Geremia, 17-year-old transgender student, the activation of the Alias career (the protocol to request the recognition of the new identity), which would have allowed him to use a different identity while awaiting the transition. The news, which led the school representatives and the children to mobilize and occupy the school, also reached the Chamber, with the secretary of the Italian Left, Nicola Fratoianni ready to ask for a parliamentary question on the affair to Minister Patrizio Bianchi.

“Claiming that the institution is not ready for the Alias career is embarrassing and unacceptable”, attacks the secretary. «The school must always favor inclusion. The Ministry of Education activates a check on Dini ». “It is absurd that a student cannot see his or her identity recognized because some professors could be troubled by the change, as claimed by the principal,” thunders Samuele Badalassi, one of Dini’s school representatives. “After our protests, the manager took a step forward: she said that the matter will be discussed at the next school council, on December 13th. Let’s hope it’s not a way to keep it going ».

The decision to deny Geremia the Alias career appears, in fact, incomprehensible to many students of the institute: “It would allow him to be recognized for what he is. Other institutes are already doing it ”, explains Andrea Aretini of the Pisan Network of Middle Students, according to whom“ it is precisely from the schools that the change on these issues should start ”.
