“It is extremely dangerous for the war in Ukraine to turn into a world war”

It is “extremely dangerous” war in Ukraine to be converted in a world war appreciates its chancellor Austria, Carl Nehamer, while expressing the belief that the conflict in the country will worsen. He also points out that The EU’s assessments are serious and not very optimistic, and the fact that there are channels of communication with the Kremlin is positive.

“It is extremely dangerous, in the true sense of the word, for war to turn into a world war. So far, NATO and the United States have reacted politically, not militarily. If they reacted differently, Russia would use it as an occasion for escalation. “The Austrian Chancellor stressed in an interview with Der Standard newspaper that “it is positive that we can still talk to Vladimir Putin.”

At the same time, Mr. Nehamer warns that the conflict will escalate, “as the will of the Ukrainians to defend themselves is currently a huge challenge to the willingness of the Russians to fight.” The morale of the troops is higher, he says, on the Ukrainian side, which at the same time means that more and more powerful weapons will be used on the other side. Whether and when there will be a ceasefire depends on the substance on whether the strongest will achieve his goal, he estimates. “If the Russian Federation approaches its goal, it will become increasingly difficult to reach peace talks or even a ceasefire,” he said.

Carl Nehamer

Responding to criticism that wants Austria “close” to Russia in recent decades, Carl Nehammer counters that his country has always been “A place of dialogue between East and West and a bridge builder”.

“Russia’s war changes everything”

He acknowledged, however, that the Austrian economy had invested heavily in Russia from the beginning, based on the idea that economic trade always opened the country to the West to some degree and laid the groundwork for peaceful relations.

“But the war in Russia is changing everything now,” Nehamer said, referring to severe EU financial sanctions, noting that many Austrian companies are now leaving Russia altogether.

Regarding the security of neutral countries, the Chancellor underlines that Austria is part of a European security system and refers with emphasis to the commitment from art. 42, par. 7 of the EU Treaty, on mutual protection and non-NATO EU member states in the event of an external attack. The provision concerns Austria, Malta, Cyprus, Finland and Sweden, he noted.
