It is false that Lula used electronic point in the Globo debate

Investigated Content: Video of 37 seconds published on TikTok in which a man claims that former President Lula would be with an electronic point in the debate held by Rede Globo on Friday (28). In the recording, the author shows photos of the candidate’s ear and an excerpt from the debate in which the PT candidate puts his hand on his right ear, giving the idea that he was listening to something through the supposed electronic point.

where it was published: TikTok.

Completion of Proof: It is false that the presidential candidate Lula (PT) used an electronic point during the debate held by Rede Globo on Friday (28).

The verified content alleges that the PT used the device based on a protuberance in his ear. Comprova confirmed, through video approximation tools, that it is a natural aspect of the former president’s ear, which was reiterated by his advice.

In addition, Rede Globo reinforces that none of the presidential candidates who participated in the debate used electronic time and did not have the means to do so, due to the security tools used by the broadcaster to stop any attempt to circumvent the rules.

Comprova classifies as false all content invented or edited to change its original meaning and is deliberately disclosed to spread a falsehood.

Scope of publication: Comprova investigates suspicious content with the greatest reach on social networks. By early Saturday afternoon (29), the video had 1.8 million views. The content was deleted from the platform soon after.

What does the publisher say?: As TikTok does not allow the sending of messages between profiles that do not follow each other, Comprova contacted through the email available on the user’s YouTube channel. Until the close of the check, however, there was no return.

How do we check: Comprova started the verification by searching for photos of the debate in the image bank of G1. In reports from UOL It’s from G1we check the passage in which Lula signals that he is not listening to his opponent, Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Using the tool’s magnifying glass mechanism InVID to enlarge images, Comprova analyzed the photographs in which the former president’s ears appear.

Through a Google search for “Lula” and “electronic point”, Comprova also found checks carried out by the AFP, Magnifying glass, Fact or Fake and through the website Rumors.org.

Finally, the press offices of Lula’s campaign and Rede Globo were questioned about the accusation made in the video in question.

Lula says he doesn’t listen to Bolsonaro

One of the excerpts from the debate, used in the verified video, shows Bolsonaro, in the foreground, talking about job creation and, in the background, Lula. The PT begins to gesticulate and hit his right ear. Then there is a cut in the video and only the president appears. Soon after, Lula approaches and claims that she couldn’t hear the question.

[Jair Bolsonaro]: Even during the pandemic, Brazil created jobs. In the last month alone, there were 250 thousand, an average very close to that month by month. You said a few days ago, Lula, it’s on tape, that you want to create jobs for men and women. You just don’t know how. What do you think of our government creating jobs?

[Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva]: I honestly did not understand. Because he’s talking inside. I couldn’t, Bonner, hear what he said.

[Jair Bolsonaro]: May I have a refill.

[Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva]: Speak a little louder.

[Jair Bolsonaro]: Come on.

[Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva]: So speak without shame. Speak up.

[William Bonner]: A minute please. Let’s stop the two clocks. The dynamics of the debate foresee five minutes for each one. Let’s not stop the clock because one didn’t listen. If you didn’t listen, he’ll say “I didn’t listen”, the other repeats, time will run out, people. Let’s go. Please. Advisors, please keep silent. Candidates, let’s go.

This snippet can be found between 01:32:41 and 01:33:42 of the recording of the debate available in full on G1.

The images analyzed by the verification through the approximation tools also do not show the device in the former president’s ear.

Lula’s adviser denies use of electronic point

Sought after, Lula’s advice sent the link to the publication on the former president’s official websitewhich denies that PT had used an electronic point during the debate.

In the text, they allege that the disinformation was disseminated with the aim of “justifying Lula’s security in his responses”. “They invented that Lula would be using an electronic point. It’s a lie, obviously! And even a perfectly ordinary gesture was used to push this narrative forward,” they add.

The PT campaign adds that what they point out as the electronic point is, in fact, “a natural protuberance in the former president’s ear”.

Globo denies that candidates used electronic point

Sought by Comprova, Globo’s communication responded that neither of the two presidential candidates used electronic points during the debate.

The company highlighted that the electronic point is used to serve “exclusively to its presenters and commentators during their productions”, which was done on Friday.

“For this use, the installation of antennas and low-power transmitters is required inside the studio. This service was not offered, requested or even made available to any of the candidates”, says a note sent to Comprova.

The company adds that “it would be impossible for any candidate to operate an electronic point from outside the studio, as the shielded walls prevent the entry of radio frequencies”.

According to the broadcaster, on the day of the debate, only three advisors for each candidate and a photographer entered the studios, “monitored at all times by a producer”.

Other checks on the topic: The website Rumors.orgthe fact-checking agency AFPa Magnifying glass it’s the Fact or Fakefrom the G1, investigated the same content and concluded that Lula did not use an electronic point during the presidential debate.
