In an interview with CNN, the poet, singer and composer Gilberto Gil stated that it is important for the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) to have a representative like him in the ethnic sense. The musician became the second black man in the academy, which has, in addition to Gil, only the immortal Domício Proença Filho among its 40 chairs.
The importance of black people for Brazilian civilization, for the formation of Brazilian civilization, is extraordinary. These moments, this welcome to someone like me at the Academy have this meaning too

“It is important for ABL to have a representative like me in this regard [da dimensão étnica].”
The singer won the dispute with 21 votes against seven of the poet Salgado Maranhão. There were still four blank votes and two null votes.
“It is this dimension of Brazilian blackness that, to a certain extent, is also being embraced by the Academy,” said Gil.

Gil’s election took place a week after the ABL made the actress Fernanda Montenegro immortal. For the singer, both nominations show the “dynamization of life” of the entity.
“It’s important to her [a Academia] and for us, who are arriving, bringing these new meanings”, said the composer.
“ABL is associating itself with this more elastic sense of consideration for Brazilian cultural life.”
