The government of São Paulo announced, this Wednesday (12), a 70% reduction in public capacity and a requirement for proof of vaccination against Covid-19 for stadiums, concerts and other events with large agglomerations. In addition, the mandatory use of masks in the state has been extended until at least March 31.
“We are facing a pandemic of unvaccinated, non-vaccinated and unvaccinated children, these two groups are responsible for this increase that we see in the number of hospitalizations and cases”, said the executive coordinator of the Center for Contingency Against to Covid-19 from São Paulo, João Gabbardo.
In an interview with CNN This Thursday (13), infectious disease specialist David Uip said he believes it is impossible to inspect the use of mandatory masks in São Paulo. “How do you keep an eye on a state with 44 million people who move around all the time?” he declared.
The doctor from Sírio Libanês and a member of the Scientific Council of the State of São Paulo stated that the requirement for the protective accessory “is a problem much more of awareness than of surveillance capacity”.
“It is practically impossible for you to monitor everything that happens in every public space and private situations. You will see a party of 3 thousand people and no one wearing a mask”, he said.
According to the government of São Paulo, there has been a 58% increase in the number of people hospitalized in ICU beds in recent weeks, and a 99% increase in the number of patients in the wards.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, São Paulo is the Brazilian state with the highest number of deaths and contaminations caused by the new coronavirus.
Until this Wednesday (12), the state of São Paulo already had 155,420 deaths and 4,478,468 cases of Covid-19, according to data from the National Council of Health Secretary (Conass).
The vaccination rate in São Paulo, until this Wednesday, was 85.47% of the population with at least one dose and 79.66% of people with the complete vaccination schedule.
“We have a breakthrough [da Ômicron] impressive, something like never seen before. The increase in the number of cases exceeds by some times those in the past since the beginning of the pandemic”, declared David Uip.
