This Tuesday (4), the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, announced the cancellation of street blocks for the Rio Carnival due to the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases.
Next Friday (7), the Rio de Janeiro City Hall should release more information about Carnival and the parade of samba schools in Marquês de Sapucaí.
In an interview with CNN, Eduardo Paes explained that the street blocks in Rio de Janeiro, due to their own characteristics, prevent the establishment of any sanitary control.
“At least that’s how it is here in Rio: the street carnival has a lot to do with the territory where the blocks come out. They are, in general, blocks that are connected with that neighborhood”, said the mayor.
“It is a very complex logistics in which sanitary controls are not feasible to be established”, he added.
The alternative of three locations in the city being chosen and isolated for the main blocks to parade was offered. But, according to Paes, representatives of the Independent Association of Blocs in the city (Sebastiana) did not agree with the proposal.
However, so far, the traditional parade of samba schools at the Marquês de Sapucaí sambódromo will be maintained.
“Carnival at Sapucaí is a ‘samba stadium’. In the same way that you have sanitary rules and barriers that you can establish for a Flamengo, Corinthians or Grêmio game, you can establish on the samba catwalk”, he declared.
“So that’s it: street carnival canceled and the Sapucaí carnival released with very tough, restricted sanitary barriers, which will still be defined in due course”, he concluded.
Vaccination of Rio de Janeiro children against Covid-19
The Ministry of Health defines, this Wednesday (5), the procedures for carrying out the immunization of children against Covid-19.
According to Paes’ estimates, Rio de Janeiro is “more than ready” to vaccinate around 500,000 children.
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro stressed that the city will not require any form of medical prescription for children aged 5 to 11 to receive the immunizing agent.
“We defend that the vaccine is applied as soon as possible”, he stated.
