It is necessary to monitor signs, says specialist after attack on SP school

In an interview with CNN this Monday (27th), the day that a teacher was stabbed to death in São Paulo, Cláudia Costin, director of the Center for Educational Policies at FGV, stated that it is necessary to monitor signs to avoid cases of this type, but also to provide support to students and teachers to overcome the trauma.

This checking of signs must be done, as Costin points out, both by the parents of the students and by the relatives of other colleagues.

A CNN obtained access to an incident report against the young man who carried out the attack this Wednesday, in which the school where he previously studied reports “suspicious behavior”, such as posting videos of himself carrying a firearm and simulating violent attacks.

“The student forwarded messages and photos of weapons to the other students via WhatsApp and some parents are feeling cornered and frightened by such messages and photos”, adds the bulletin.

The young man in question is 13 years old, an age that Costin considers to be inappropriate for him to be unsupervised when using the internet.

In addition, the specialist pointed out that “we are living in very complicated times, with a lot of hatred, a lot of resentment”. “It is impossible that this does not also affect children and adolescents”, she pointed out.

Another point highlighted by the expert is the need for psychological support for students and teachers who have experienced attacks like this Wednesday’s.

“It will be very important, now, to have a conversation with the teachers to deal with the pain they had in relation to that moment. (…) And on the side of children and adolescents, all the sense of fear they went through, ”she noted.

“We need to look at the signs, but to, almost in quotes, the treatment of these students and teachers for everything they went through”, he added, also noting that he thinks that the measure of suspending classes is adequate, combined with the conversation with those involved.
