Age is nothing but a number and Judy Dede knows it! Judy went viral on TikTok because, at 82, she decided to get her first tattoo and shows us that, in truth, it is never too late to do what makes you happy.
Her granddaughter, Brandy O’Reilly, documented the process on the video platform and Judy has not stopped receiving support from people around the world who come across her story.
“We never know what tomorrow will bring us”
Judy says she made the decision by reading an article on Reader’s Digest About an 80-year-old woman who surprised her family by getting a tattoo on her birthday. Also, she commented that her husband was tattooed, but she never considered it because when she grew up, “you didn’t hear of tattooed women.”
I was completely surprised. And I thought, ‘You know what? I’m going to live each day to the best of my ability because we never know what tomorrow will bring. ‘
His family was surprised
Once he decided to get a tattoo, he informed his family, who, of course, were very surprised.
We were doing some shopping and we just went to the grocery store and I said, ‘Turn off the car. I’m going to surprise you. I want to get a tattoo. ‘ They were stunned.
Brandy says that she even had to ask her grandmother to repeat what she had said, as she couldn’t believe it.
When he told me he wanted to get a tattoo, I was completely shocked. I had to record it because I couldn’t even believe I had said that.
Despite the initial surprise, her entire family supported her and that day many members of her decided to get tattoos together with her, to accompany her on that special day.
Four generations got tattooed with her. My two children – her great-grandchildren – got tattoos for the first time with her. My mother, my wife, my two daughters-in-law and I also get tattoos. Even my 10 year old son participated, he drew a tattoo with a sharpie, so he could be part of the occasion.
The final result
Judy got a tattoo design that incorporates a musical note, which refers to the love that the whole family has for music, a fishing hook, in honor of her late son, Brandy’s father, a cancer ribbon, in honor of Brandy’s late mother-in-law, and a heart, dedicated to all the people she loves.
Regarding the fame she has gained due to the TikTok that Brandy uploaded, Judy says that it is a very unexpected situation.
I would never have dreamed of it. Suddenly Brandy says to me ‘Grandma, we got a message from someone in South America. Messages have come from all over the world ‘… it leaves me very surprised.

Even though it was a bit of a painful experience, Judy claims that she can’t wait for the day to complete the design and would even like to get a couple more tattoos.
I told Brandy that I will get tattooed again when I turn 83. What do you think? People think I’m done, but I think I’m just getting started.
