Tesla car owners are the first to receive many “innovations”, but what remained inaccessible to them was the Android Auto car platform. However, enthusiasts have proven that running Android Auto in a Tesla vehicle is possible.

It is possible: Android Auto was launched on a Tesla electric car

Emil Borconi, creator of the AAWireless smart key and distinguished member of the mobile XDA Developers community, has posted a video showing Android Auto launching on a Tesla display with touchscreen controls.

However, from the same video, it is clear that the project is at an early stage of development. The good news is that Android Auto runs Tesla at all. Even at an early stage, the platform functions while the vehicle is in motion. Borkoni also notes that he did not use any additional equipment, only a smartphone app. The platform currently uses an Android Auto server on the phone, which is connected to Tesla via a hotspot.

So far, the project has a lot of limitations. For example, it works on a Tesla Model 3, but not on a 2017 Model S. In addition, the performance and resolution are not yet up to the mark – correct operation is supported only at 480p, but from 720p everything starts to slow down. It also requires an internet connection to work and when Wi-Fi is turned off, it must be turned on again manually. Other problems include the lack of access to a microphone, car GPS and multi-touch gesture recognition.
