It is the night of the Blue Moon: what it is and why to see it

It is tonight, the night of Sunday 22 August 2021, that the blue moon show begins at 8.30 pm, a special event, which is repeated every 2-5 years. The next will be in 2024.

WHAT IS THAT
The moon will not change color, it will not be more blue (or less yellow), than usual. It is indicated by the name of “Blue Moon” the third full moon of a season that has four (while there are usually three). That is, that of August 22, 2021 is the third full moon of summer 2021, which has already had two full moons (June 24 and July 24) and will have yet another – the fourth – on September 21.

It is an “extra” moon, called “Blue Moon” by the Anglo-Saxon world.

THE EXCEPTION
The Blue Moon therefore, even if it has no different colors or light, is however an exception and is considered as such a moment of the calendar to celebrate. Come? Usually by making an assessment of their goals, their goals. The night in which to take stock of the situation and, why not, make new choices.

THE WAY OF SAYING
The “Blue Moon” in the Anglo-Saxon world has also become a way of saying to indicate something that rarely happens and for which we have to wait a long time: “once in a blue moon”.

WHY IT HAPPENS
The cycle of the moon is not 30 days but about 29.5, so the lunar cycles in a year are not exactly 12 (1 per month), but 12.37. Thus it happens that depending on the calendar there can be 13 full moons in a year.

THE PETTACOLO OF THIS EVENING
The Blue Moon can be seen as early as 2pm but it will be after sunset, around 8.30pm, which will be a real show. In fact it will light up the sky together with the two giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn, both in opposition to the sun and both in the period of maximum visibility. They can be seen with the naked eye southeast above the horizon after dark. To be sure, look at their light: that of the planets is fixed and do not flicker like that of the stars!
