“It knows that a nuclear war can never be won” – NATO’s message to Russia:

Russia knows that a nuclear war can never be won and should never be fought, NATO Secretary General explained Jens Stoltenberg attending the Alliance Defense Ministers’ Summit in Brussels.

Asked about Moscow’s threats to use nuclear weapons, Mr Stoltenberg noted that “NATO is a defensive alliance and it is there to prevent conflict, to prevent a war. That is why we have strengthened our deterrence, to send a clear message to Russia that we are there to protect and defend all allies.” He added that Russia’s use of nuclear weapons “will have harsh consequences.”

“We are closely monitoring Russia’s nuclear posture, we have not seen any changes, but we remain vigilant because nuclear threats and rhetoric from the Russia they are dangerous,” the NATO Secretary-General emphasized. Regarding Belarus’ involvement, he pointed out that “Lukashenko must stop supporting the Russian war effort.” Also, Jens Stoltenberg mentioned that there will be a meeting of the NATO nuclear planning group, clarifying that “this is a routine meeting that has been planned for a long time and during which we will set out how to continue the assurance that NATO’s deterrence remains safe and effective”.

Finally, Mr. Stoltenberg reiterated that the last few weeks have seen the most serious escalation since the start of the war in Ukraine last February, according to the Athens News Agency.
