Marielle Franco's widow, councilor and architect Monica Benício (Psol-RJ), stated that the arrest of police chief Rivaldo Ribeiro, former head of RJ's civil police, was seen as a surprise. Rivaldo would have been the first authority to receive and welcome the family.
“Today, knowing that the man who hugged us, showed solidarity and smiled saying that 'this case would be a priority' is involved in this order, makes us understand that the civil police were not just negligent, that it was not just because of a mistake that we reached six years of pain”, said the councilor upon arriving at the PF headquarters in Rio’s Port Zone.
Monica Benício states that Rivaldo's involvement reveals that the institution was “conniving throughout this time of not clarifying the case”.
“In six years we always said that unfortunately it was a very well executed case, but we also understood that in six years there was a lack of political will for this case to be elucidated”, concluded Marielle’s widow.
Earlier this Sunday (24), Marielle Franco's mother, Marinete da Silva, declared herself “surprised and sad” about the involvement of the police officer who had received the family and who had said “it was a matter of honor to solve the case”.
Sources from the Public Security Secretariat informed the CNN that Barbosa may have covered up those who ordered the crime, which has made it difficult to conclude the case to this day.
Monica Benício said that this was an important step for democracy and for the country, but that it was not the end of the case.
“It is without a doubt the beginning of a new fight because we want everyone to be held responsible and for us to have justice for Marielle and Anderson”, said the councilor at the PF headquarters.
“These arrests would not be the end of this case, because we want not only the perpetrators to be identified, but all the people who had some type of involvement to be held accountable under the law for what they did.”
The councilor states that there is still a lack of clarification on the motivation, which will only become clear once she has access to all the documents and investigations.
