The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) approved, this Wednesday (2), a resolution condemning Russia for the invasion against Ukraine. There were 141 votes in favour, five against and 35 abstentions. The meeting was convened by the Security Council and held as an emergency to discuss the situation in Eastern Europe.
For the European Union ambassador in Brazil, Ignacio Ybánez, the approval was “very relevant”. “We had an overwhelming vote to condemn Russia, which only got five votes in its favour,” he said in an interview with CNN.
“It was a very clear answer, it is political isolation, Russia is alone. The country has to understand that the resolution is very clear and stop the violent action against Ukraine, out of respect for Ukrainian sovereignty,” said Ybánez.
Introducing the draft resolution, Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN, Sergiy Kylytsya, said that the “crimes committed by Russia” are barbaric and difficult to understand and called for respect for the UN Charter.
For the EU representative in Brazil, international cooperation and diplomacy are the way to end the conflict. “We must return to the path of diplomacy, through negotiations. We always believe that. Cooperation with the US and with other partners, such as Brazil, is important to bring Russia up to its responsibility”, concluded Ybánez.
