“It was a fatality”, says doctor about businesswoman’s death after plastic surgery

Plastic surgeon Alexandre Carvalho Colombaretti, responsible for the businesswoman’s aesthetic surgeries Viviane Lira Monte, 24 years old who passed away on September 26th, 22 days after the procedures, told CNN that what happened was a “fatality”.

In an interview, Colombaretti stated that has not yet been summoned by the police to testify but which is at the disposal of the Court. He also mentioned having access to reports on the patient’s death, which, according to him, indicate lung infection, unrelated to surgery .

“She already had flu-like symptoms and later developed pneumonia. The infection that caused death had no connection with the surgery. Upon admission to the ICU, the hypothesis of thromboembolism was ruled out”, explained the surgeon.

In a video recorded shortly before the surgeries, Viviane says that having the plastic surgery was a “big dream, a big achievement.”

The doctor stressed that he will await the final reports on the death, but believes that the patient had an early-stage flu, which had not yet been detected, at the time of the surgery, despite having presented a report favorable to the surgical risk.

“There will still be an investigation, but from what I saw, it was a fatality. Her infection was not related to the surgical procedure. I will continue to follow the case and the Civil Police investigations”, said Colombaretti.

Cash payments and other surgeries

Renan Santiago, Viviane’s partner, informed CNN that the procedures were paid in cash and in cash. When asked about the matter, the doctor confirmed, explaining that this type of payment is common in the Ceará region, where he frequently works.

Colombaretti also mentioned that he had another surgery on the same date, without complications. Regarding the fact that Viviane was discharged less than 24 hours after surgery, he explained that this is “normal”.

“I operated in a renowned hospital in Sobral. I do not perform surgeries in clinics. The operation began at 8am and ended around 1pm. She stayed in the operating room for monitoring after anesthesia, and would only have stayed longer if there had been a problem,” he concluded.

Position of the Federal Council of Medicine

In a note, the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) stated: “The CFM is an appeal-level judgment body. To maintain its exemption, it does not comment on specific cases.”
