Back in May, Google announced a new tool to simplify the process of removing search results that reveal people’s contacts and other identifying information. Now this feature is starting to work, as reported by 9To5Google.
Google’s Android app now has a “Results about you” option in the menu below your profile picture. It redirects users to a page explaining how they can ask Google to remove search results if they contain a phone number, home address, email, or other personally identifiable information.
To do this, users just need to click on the menu of three buttons in the upper right corner of the SERP element, and then select “Clear result”. After that, the Google application will be able to monitor the progress of the request. In the future, you can specify the reason for sending the deletion request:
- shows personal contact information;
- shows contact information with the intent to cause harm;
- shows other personal information;
- information is outdated.
The feature is currently in beta testing and has worked with random users from the US and Europe. In the past, developers have explained the difficulty they face when receiving requests to remove content from search results: moderators must ensure that they do not limit the availability of useful information (for example, news articles).
