As it states cnn.comthe prize is for the winner to supply the Elysee Palace, the official residence of the French president, with baguettes for a year, while he will also receive the sum of 4,000 euros.

“The competition, the oldest of its kind in France, is a real source of pride for us,” said Fran Thomas, president of the Syndicat des Boulangers du Grand Paris bakers union.

So for the annual competition, bakers are judged specifically on their “traditional baguette”, a designation that differentiates good quality breads from their competitors. “It’s an extremely important competition for them,” Olivia Polsky, Paris’ deputy mayor for commerce and industry, tells CNN.

In fact, the judges’ rules are particularly strict. Of the 176 baguettes submitted this year, 40 were immediately rejected because they were too short, too long, too heavy, too light or made with the wrong flour.

It is noted that the French baguette has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since last year.
