“It won’t surprise if it’s an African or Asian Pope,” says Dom Odilo

At a press conference held on Monday (21), Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, Archdiocese of São Paulo, spoke about the choice of a new church leader after the death of Pope Francis.

The cardinal points to the changes that took place at the Cardinian College during the Francisco Papacy. According to him, the college is more internationalized, since formerly the cardinals were mostly European, especially Italian.

Despite the large number of European cardinals, Pope Francis has opened doors to Latin America, Asia and Africa in recent years. This process of inclusion began in the 1970s, with Pope John Paul II, and took strength during the Papacy of Francis.

“No one should be surprised if an African or Asian cardinal was chosen to be a Pope,” says the Archdiocese of São Paulo.

Dom Odilo stresses that the next chosen Pope must take care of the church, and look at challenging situations without neglecting any aspect.

“Anyone who is chosen as a Pope will receive the care of the church as a whole,” he concluded.
