A bloc of conservative parties, led by the far-right Brothers of Italy appears to have a clear majority in the next elections, which could take place as early as September, according to a study of recent opinion polls.
Prime Minister Mario Draghi tendered his resignation last week after the populist 5 Star movement refused to back the government in a vote of confidence in the Senate.
President Sergio Mattarella has rejected his resignation and asked Draghi to address parliament this week, hoping that unity will return to the government’s ranks at a time of international turmoil and economic strain.
However, if the coalition dispute goes unresolved and Mattarella has to dissolve parliament, the Conservatives are well positioned to win an outright victory for the first time since 2008, according to a survey by YouTrend and Cattaneo Zanetto & Co.
The right-wing bloc, including Matteo Salvini’s Liga party, Forza Italy, by Silvio Berlusconi, and Brothers of Italy, by Giorgia Meloni, would win up to 221 seats out of 400 in the Lower House and 108 out of 200 in the Senate.
Currently, the Brothers of Italy leads the polls with more than 22% support, ahead of the main center-left group, the Democratic Party (PD).
In the event of a victory, Meloni would be on the cusp of becoming prime minister, although she could nominate someone else from her field if she wanted to.
“Certainly, if this crisis leads to early elections, it will likely be a big advantage for the center-right led by Giorgia Meloni,” Lorenzo Pregliasco, head of YouTrend, told Reuters.
