Italian mobster extradited after more than 20 years on the run

The representative of one of the biggest mafias in Italy, Rocco Morabito, arrived this Wednesday (6th) in his native country, after being extradited by the Brazilian government. The criminal must serve a sentence of thirty years in prison, according to information provided by the Italian Minister of the Interior.

The extradition of the Italian was authorized by the National Secretariat of Justice last Friday (1st). In early March, the action was approved by the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

Morabito had been on the run for over twenty years and was detained in Paraíba in May of last year. The mobster was part of a list of the most dangerous fugitives from the Italian government, being considered one of the intermediaries between drug traffickers and the Ndrangheta mafia.

Morabito’s conviction involves the crimes of international drug trafficking and involvement in a criminal organization.

In 2019, the mafioso was detained in Uruguay, but managed to escape from prison before his extradition was authorized.

When he was arrested in the South American country, Morabito had 13 cell phones, an automatic pistol, 12 credit and debit cards, a large amount of Uruguayan money and US$50,000, as well as currency certificates. worth US$100,000 (about R$542,000), the Uruguayan Ministry of the Interior informed.

The arrest of fugitives linked to the Ndrangheta is an objective of the ten countries that make up the Interpol Cooperation Against ‘Ndrangheta (I-CAN), including Brazil.
