Italian Prime Minister says she will create unprecedented rule to stop raves in the country

Italy’s new right-wing government on Monday signaled it would crack down on unlicensed rave parties, with organizers risking prison sentences of up to six years for holding such events.

The move came after a weekend Halloween party at an abandoned site near the northern city of Modena, which attracted more than 1,000 Italians and foreigners, and brought complaints about the noise and its impact on traffic in the area.

“We have shown that the state will not turn a blind eye and fail to act when faced with breaking the law,” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told a news conference, saying Italy needed to tighten the rules to align with its neighbors. Europeans.

Meloni, whose government took over in October on a pledge to be tough on enforcing law and order, mentioned a larger rave last year in the city of Viterbo, in which two deaths were recorded.

“The impression that the Italian state has given in recent years is that it is negligent in terms of respecting the rules and the law,” she said.

Under proposals signed by his government, those behind such parties could in the future face between three and six years in prison, and have raves equipment confiscated.

The new rule will apply to unauthorized events of at least 50 people that pose a risk to health, security or public order, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi told a news conference.
