An Italian sprinter will be the first transgender athlete to compete in the Paralympics today. Valentina Petrillo, 50, who transitioned in 2019, will compete in the T12 category in the women’s 200m. The T12 category is for visually impaired athletes. He will also later compete in the 400 meter race. Petrillo won two bronze medals at last year’s Para Athletics World Championships and has vowed to be a “role model” for other athletes after being selected to compete in the Paralympics. “Honestly, I can’t wait to be in Paris and race on that beautiful purple track and in front of all that enthusiastic crowd.
