Italian tourism is facing problems

Italy is betting on the tourism recovery this year. The big cities are full of foreign and local visitors and in the most famous resorts the owners of hotels and restaurants are completely satisfied with the reservations and the receipts so far.

But there is a problem with human resources. 350,000 seasonal workers are missing and the shortcomings in the tourism sector are obvious. The minister in charge, Massimo Garavalia, who belongs to the League, signed a decision to allow workers from abroad to enter the country.

Part of the commentators and political forces attribute this lack to unemployment benefits, to the so-called “social income”, with which one can secure up to 700 euros per month.

But there are other causes. According to today’s article in La Stampa, wages are often low and some employers do not respect the law. For example, in Portofino, outside of Genoa, a waiter earns 1,180 euros, but is obliged to rent a room to sleep on his own, which costs at least 400 euros. At the same time, according to the Turin newspaper, overtime is often paid with “black”, undeclared money. At the same time on the Italian Riviera a bottle of bottled water on a coffee table can cost up to 5 euros. “The work of these workers, that is, is worth 236 bottles of water,” the Italian newspaper underlines.

“I had to run away from my previous job. They did not pay me overtime and treated me badly. I now have a fixed-term contract, but I know it is not a guarantee for my future,” a 25-year-old waitress told La Stampa. origin from Peru. Accuracy and unsafe working conditions. To park the car this year in Portofino you pay 37.5 euros per day.

It is the big difference with Greece, where in many resorts you still find reasonable prices and they do not “tax” your car, many Italian tourists tell us these days.
