Italy: 23 migrants and refugees disembarked in Catania from the Ocean Viking ship

Italian authorities have allowed twenty-three migrants and refugees to disembark from the Ocean Viking ship in the port of Catania due to their critical state of health. In total, the Ocean Viking, which belongs to the NGO SOS Méditerranée, rescued – in three different operations – 359 migrants and refugees. These are 265 men, 31 women, 20 minors with their parents and 43 unaccompanied minors. The ship, as reported by the Athens News Agency, is now continuing its journey to Ancona, which was indicated by the Italian authorities as a “safe port”. Three days ago, the Ocean Viking also proceeded to rescue 25 migrants and refugees who were on an unruly ship in the central Mediterranean. Rescuers claimed that they were left helpless for a week – despite their pleas for help – and that at least 60 people died of thirst and hunger.
