Italy announced 97 coronavirus-related deaths on Sunday, up from 123 the previous day, according to the health ministry, while the daily number of new infections fell to 24,259 from 28,064.
According to Reuters, Italy has recorded 135,641 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. It is the second highest in Europe after Britain and the ninth highest in the world. To date, more than 5.3 million cases have been diagnosed.
The number of patients admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 – excluding those in the intensive care unit – amounted to 7,726 on Sunday, from 7,576 a day earlier.
There were 78 new admissions to intensive care units, up from 95 on Saturday. The total number of patients admitted to intensive care units increased to 966 from 953.
About 566,300 coronavirus tests were performed, up from 697,740 last year, the health ministry said.
