In Italy, the cases of the coronavirus increased in the last week (from June 29 to July 5) by 55%, according to the data of the Gimbe scientific institute. At the same time, patient admissions to hospitals showed an increase of 32.6%, to ICUs of the country by 36.3%, while deaths increased by 18.4%.
The Gimbe Foundation adds that the increase is continuous and that there is a large percentage of cases, which are not recorded. “The high percentage of the population that is positive for the virus risks causing a ‘new de facto lockdown’, including in the tourism sector,” the scientific report states.
“At this stage, the administration of the fourth dose of the vaccine to the elderly and vulnerable groups must be accelerated, but also the use of the mask must be significantly increased,” emphasized the president of Gimbe, Nino Cartabelota.
The region of Italy in which the largest increase in coronavirus cases was recorded in the last week is Lombardy, with a rate of 95.9%, while the most limited spread of the virus was found in Sardinia, with an increase of 24.7%. “There are substantial reasons for concern, because admissions of patients to hospitals in the coming weeks are expected to continue to increase,” said the president of the Gimbe Foundation.
