AT a few days of International Women’s Rights Day, March 8, a hundred personalities signed a letter to the online Italian dictionary Braids, reports the BBC, Friday March 5. In question, the list of synonyms provided by the dictionary when one searches for the definition of the word “woman”: one can in particular find particularly misogynistic and insulting terms, like “whore”, “bitch” or “bitch”. For its part, the list of synonyms for the word “man” contains hardly any degrading term. We find “businessman”, “man of honor” or “man of science”. The signatories therefore demand the deletion of these synonyms associated with women, which reinforce “misogynistic stereotypes, which objectify women and present them as inferior”.
Give a correct and undegraded vision of women
At the origin of the letter, activist Maria Beatrice Giovanardi, who has already led the same type of campaign (with success) towards theOxford English Dictionary to remove synonyms like “bird” or “nana”. “Language shapes reality and influences the way women are perceived and treated,” says the activist, supported in particular by the Deputy Managing Director of the Bank of Italy, Alessandra Perrazzelli.
“This will not end everyday sexism, but it could contribute to a correct description and vision of women and their role in society today,” she adds. The dictionary Braids, he has not yet responded to the request. However, according to the BBC, he said in a blog post in November that “if society and culture express negativity through words, a dictionary cannot refuse to document them.”
