Italy: About 600 immigrants in 24 hours

Refugees are putting unbearable pressure on the government. In the midst of a pandemic, Draghi is called upon to manage the arrival of hundreds of new migrants in Lampedusa and Calabria.

Despite the severe bad weather, the arrival of immigrants in Italy continues unabated. Six hundred migrants and refugees have landed off the coast of Lower Italy in the last twenty-four hours. 303 “desperate of the sea” arrived in Calabria. Almost all of them come from Egypt, making a trip in the raging sea and under extremely adverse conditions – among them thirty minors.

115 migrants, who had started from a Tunisian port, managed to reach the port of Lampedusa with small fishing boats. Another 200 migrants landed outside Bari, in Santa Maria di Leuca. In this region of the Ionian Sea, opposite Albania and Greece, the reception centers are overcrowded. Arrivals have been continuing on a daily basis in recent weeks.

M. Draghi: The situation in the country is “unbearable”

Italy’s strategy is clear: no immigrant should lose their life in the Mediterranean because of the indifference of governments and port authorities. At the same time, however, Mario Draghi openly stressed that his country can no longer lift so much weight from the migratory flows starting from the south coast of the Mediterranean. He even described the situation as “intolerable” and called on the European Union to offer additional support.

The issue is also a major problem for the balances of the government of Rome. Lega’s Mateo Salvini continues to accuse incumbent Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgeze of ineffective treatment of the situation.

According to La Stampa newspaper, from January 1st to October 31st, 53,439 migrants and refugees arrived in Italy in 1,192 boats, including 6,500 minors. The island of Lampedusa is in the front line, with 30,398 arrivals, mainly from Libya and Tunisia. From the beginning of the year until November 1, in the central Mediterranean, finally, according to official records, 1,225 lives were lost. In reality, however, everyone knows that there are many more.
