In Italy last week there was an increase of coronavirus cases by 42.1%. In terms of the various regions, Liguria, with its capital in Genoa, shows an increase of 88%, and the region of Friuli, in northeastern Italy, 74%. But in Lombardy, with Milan as its capital, covid 19 cases rose by 58% last week.
At the same time, nationwide hospital admissions increased by 13%. In the last seven days, 390 people have lost their lives and a total of 50,000 additional cases have been recorded.
Apart from northern Italy, the situation in Sicily, especially in the wider region of Catania, is also a matter of concern. The main reason in this case is the lower, in relation to the national average, percentage of vaccinated citizens.
At the same time, in the region of Trieste, the situation is characterized as “marginal” and in a week it is considered very possible to change from white to yellow zone, with the imposition of the use of the protective mask indoors and a ban on entering stores.
“Vaccines that have protected themselves and their fellow citizens cannot afford the cost of any new bans,” said Massimillano Fedriga, governor of Venezia Giulia, with Trieste as its capital.
Italian Deputy Health Minister Pierpaolo Sileri said yesterday, Sunday, that he believes that this Christmas will be “free” and that the whole society of the country was finally protected without the need for mandatory vaccination.
Health Minister Roberto Speranza, however, added after a while that “very careful steps need to be taken” and that “there is no doubt that there is a general trend, which shows that cases are increasing, even if the country is better off than many others”.
The main goal, Speranza added, is to speed up the administration of the third dose of coronavirus vaccine, even with direct calls from those who already have the right to take the “booster dose”.
In the greater Rome area, so far, only 33% of citizens over the age of 80 have received the third dose. An element that shows that it is necessary to intensify the whole effort so that the pandemic does not take on more alarming proportions during the winter.
