Italy: Catania airport reopens

The airport of Catania in Sicily reopened today after being closed yesterday Sunday, as the Etnaone of the world’s most active volcanoes, began spewing smoke and ash.

The airport has been operating since 10:00 Greek time, the airport management announced, warning of the possibility of delays, as reported by the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency.

“Due to the activity of Etna and the large amount of volcanic ash that fell on the airport, flights are suspended until conditions allow again” the airport said yesterday in a statement Katani.

THE Etna, which reaches 3,324 meters in height, is the most active volcano in Europe. It has been activated and erupted many times over the past 500,000 years.

Last year, approx 10 million passengers they passed through the international airport of Catania, which serves the eastern part of Sicily, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy.
