The group of protesters held up a banner reading “Ultima Generazione – No Gas, No Coal” and threw blue and pink paint at the entrance to La Scala. Five people were arrested, according to a police statement, and taken to the department for identification, while they will be referred to the prosecutor. Cleaning crews quickly removed the paint from the theater entrance.
La Scala will open its 2022-23 season today with a performance of Modest Mussorgsky’s Russian opera Boris Godunov. The premiere is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni for the first time as head of government, the country’s president Sergio Mattarella and the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
Over the past month, Ultima Generazione activists have thrown soup on a Van Gogh painting in Rome, a black liquid on a Gustav Klimt painting in Vienna and flour on a sports car painted by the American pop art artist Andy Warhol and was exhibited in Milan.
