The Madonnie Mountains, near the Sicilian capital, Palermo, have been under siege for days by flames from high winds and high temperatures, with fires destroying homes, industrial facilities and farmland.
Sicilian Governor Nelo Mesumeci has called for a state of emergency in the Madonna Mountains. For his part, Italian Agriculture Minister Stefano Patuanelli is expected to visit the region today to meet with the mayors of the worst-hit areas.
