Italy: Defense spending shakes Draghi’s government

Against the background of the Ukrainian and the rise of defense spending his government Mario Draghi is under pressure. Under other circumstances he would have resigned, they estimate Italian Media.

Mario Draghi is currently facing constant tensions and conflicts within his governing majority. “If there was no state of emergency due to the war in Ukraine, the government would probably have already fallen,” writes the newspaper La Repubblica.

The strong disagreements start with Italy’s commitment to increase defense spending, to 2% of GDP by 2028. That is to say, 13 billion euros must be found. The Five Stars, chaired by Giuseppe Conte, say they disagree with the massive increase in funds for defense, at a time when the country is suffering due to new economic and social problems.

Italian Undersecretary of Defense Moule was eventually forced to declare that the 2028 target would only be met if the country’s other needs allowed.

Berlusconi and Lega vs. Draghi

Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia warns Draghi that in such a difficult situation, the taxation of citizens’ real estate, nor of government bonds, can not be increased. “We do not intend to change the tax scale,” the Italian presidency said in a statement.

Matteo Salvini’s Lega, who to date has not openly condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s decisions, could not miss the whole intergovernmental dispute. The Lega expressed its complete opposition to the decision to deport 30 Russian diplomats from Italy and called for “dialogue and diplomatic initiatives”.

The political forces of the country have already started the election campaign, in view of the parliamentary elections of the spring of 2023. If, of course, Mario Draghi endures until then and does not resign faster. The Italian technocratic prime minister enjoys the full support of the President of the Republic, Sergio Matarella.

At the same time, in this critical international phase, the only thing the country does not need is a government crisis with new instability and uncertainty. But “Super Mario”, according to many analysts, has told his close associates that his patience has certain limits and that he does not mean to wear out for the sole benefit of some ambitious, party leaders.
