In 2021, 4,116 tourism companies closed in Italy, more than 1,000 in the region of Rome. And the crisis, unfortunately, continues.
In total, for the Catholic Easter, in two weeks, eight million citizens had planned to travel (to Italy and abroad). So far, only four million have bought tickets and booked hotels.
And 50% of them will remain in the region in which they live permanently, with a “leisure and relaxation escape” which will not last more than three days. The reluctance is due to rising prices – mainly fuel – of general concern over the war and the coronavirus epidemic, which has not happened in Italy either, despite the easing of precautionary measures. So far, only 6% of Italians who will travel for Catholic Easter have chosen to go abroad.
What will happen in the summer?
The biggest concern, however, concerns the summer season. Eight out of ten respondents to the Confcommercio survey said they would either reduce their vacation time or not go to a resort, not even for a weekend.
The hope of travel agents is that the fear and pessimism, over the weeks, can be somewhat reduced. In Italy, they are preparing tempting “last minute” offers in order to be able to reverse – even to a certain extent – this negative trend.
But hoteliers, restaurants, cafe-bar owners and more do not hide their strong concern. Because 60% of Italians answered that they have already limited their shopping habits and overall lifestyle, in terms of holidays, food in restaurants, but also culture.
