The holding of early parliamentary elections after the collapse of the government of the vast majority under Prime Minister Mario Draghi within 70 days was announced by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, as reported by the Italian state RAI and relayed by the Reuters agency.
The head of the Italian state announced the dissolution of the House and the Senate, the lower and upper houses of the parliament respectively, and the holding of elections within the aforementioned period, with the last Sunday within a deadline of September 25.
The date was confirmed to Reuters by an Italian government source.
“There are no prospects for the establishment of a new governing majority” until the end of the current legislative period, President Mattarella emphasized in his statements.
At the same time, he underlined that the country’s Recovery Plan must be implemented within the specified time limits, the coronavirus pandemic must be fought and “a series of procedures in the interest of Italy must be completed”.
Italy’s caretaker government under Mr Draghi, who will remain in place until a new one is formed after the election, should continue to deal with immediate priority issues such as the war in Ukraine, the cost of energy and COVID-19, the – now acting – prime minister said for his part.
