Italy: Extreme right-wing candidate arrested over Sicilian mafia ties

A candidate of the far-right party Brothers of Italy in the municipal elections that will take place the day after tomorrow in Palermo, Sicily, was arrested this afternoon on the charge of voting relations with the mafia.

This is Francesco Lombardo, 54, who, in dialogues recorded by the police, talks to the mobster godfather Vincenzo Vela who had been sentenced to 20 years in prison and was recently released due to a “bureaucratic trap”.

Lombardo was found to have openly asked his godfather Cosa Nostra to support him with all his might to be elected to the municipal council of the Sicilian capital.

A few days ago, Pietro Politsi, a candidate of the Berlusconi party Forza Italia, the godfather, Agostino Sansone, and his collaborator, Manlio Poretto, were arrested on the same charge.

According to Italian media, the Sansone family had hosted Cosa Nostra leader Toto Reina in a mansion they owned shortly before his 1993 arrest.
