The 5 Star Movement (M5S, anti-system before coming to power), the main supporter of the resigning head of government Giuseppe Conte, said on Friday he was ready to discuss with Matteo Renzi, who nevertheless provoked the current Italian political crisis.
This decision, announced Friday evening by a senior M5S leader after an interview with the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, represents a spectacular turnaround for the M5S, which categorically excluded the possibility of reconnecting with Matteo Renzi. The latter indeed brought down the government by withdrawing his small party, Italia Viva (IV) from the majority.
“Give concrete answers in the interest of the country”
“We have expressed our availability to discuss with those who wish to give concrete answers in the interest of the country and in a spirit of collaboration,” said Vito Crimi, senior M5S official after the interview with Sergio Mattarella. For Vito Crimi, Italy needs “a political government that would start from the forces of the majority who have worked together for a year and a half”, he said.
This opening of the M5S immediately sparked a positive reaction from IV, but also cracks within the movement where this turnaround will be difficult to be accepted. The words of Vito Crimi “go in the direction of what we had requested”, welcomed Ettore Rosato, right-hand man of Matteo Renzi. Vito Crimi however stressed that the candidate of the movement to lead the next government remained Giuseppe Conte, who is at loggerheads with Matteo Renzi.
“For the Movement, the only person capable of leading the country seriously and effectively through this particularly complex phase is Giuseppe Conte”, assured Vito Crimi. Giuseppe Conte was forced to resign on Tuesday following the withdrawal from his coalition of former head of government Matteo Renzi and IV, a party essential to have a parliamentary majority. Sergio Mattarella therefore began consultations on Wednesday with the country’s main political leaders to seek a solution, as the country faces a double crisis, health with nearly 88,000 dead, and economic with the most serious recession since the post-war period.
Roberto Fico, possible candidate for Conte’s succession
The other pillar of the government coalition, the Democratic Party (PD, center-left) on Thursday reaffirmed its support for Giuseppe Conte to lead a new government while the right-wing and far-right opposition pushes for early elections in because of favorable polls. Sergio Mattarella gave an update to the press after his talks and stressed the need for the country to have a government “with adequate support” in Parliament to be able to face the health, social and economic crisis.
He also stressed that the talks brought out “the prospect of a political majority made up of the same groups that supported the previous government”. He summoned, without explanation, to the seat of the Presidency of the Republic Roberto Fico, president of the Chamber of Deputies and top leader of the M5S later in the evening. The name of Roberto Fico had been mentioned as a possible candidate to succeed Giuseppe Conte.
