Italy gives OpenAI deadline to meet demands after ChatGPT investigation

Italy’s data protection agency set this Wednesday (12) the end of April as the deadline for OpenAI to meet its demands for data protection and privacy. The measure is necessary for ChatGPT to be resumed in the country.

On March 31, Microsoft-backed OpenAI took ChatGPT offline in Italy after the agency, known as Garante, temporarily suspended the platform and launched an investigation following a suspected breach of privacy rules.

The Italian agency accused OpenAI of not verifying the age of ChatGPT users and criticized the “absence of any legal basis” that would justify the collection and massive storage of personal data.

In a statement released this Wednesday (12), Guarante presented a set of claims that need to be fulfilled by the end of this month.

“Only in that case will the authority lift the provisional restrictions on the use of Italian users’ data and ChatGPT will again be accessible in Italy,” he said.

Italy was the first Western European country to take action against OpenAI. However, the rapid development of technology has attracted the attention of parliamentarians and regulatory bodies in several countries.

Experts say new regulations are needed to manage artificial intelligence because of its potential impact on national security, jobs and education.
