The Italian Minister of the Interior, in an interview he gave, emphasized that the Italy played a “determining role” in agreement reached between EU member states for asylum and immigration.
THE Matteo Piandendozzi spoke to Corriere della Sera and said that “Italy was central to this important debate. The final negotiation focused on certain points which we considered to be fundamental, such as the definition of the third countries with which the agreements can be signed. Nouns, “passed” our line, which was followed by all the countries that had raised objections».
“There is also a renegotiation clauseper year or two years, depending on the various objects. If the agreement worked, it is renewed, otherwise it is changed. We have accepted the various procedures because Italy, Greece and Malta are, de facto, countries of first arrival. If we do not agree to build the infrastructure for the various procedures that take place at the border, the arrivals of immigrants will not stop. We therefore preferred to choose a long-term approach. We are deeply convinced that our government will last, that it has perspective and, therefore, must focus on medium and long-term plans,” added the Italian interior minister.
With reference to another central point of the agreement, finally, Matteo Piandendozzi underlined to Corriere that “as far as mandatory solidarity is concerned, we preferred not to accept monetary compensation to Italybecause our country considers that, as a founding member of the Union, it has dignity and it does not need monetary compensations to turn into a collection center [σ.σ. μεταναστών] of the EU».
