Italy: Higher Health Institute confirms increase in coronavirus cases

The Italian Supreme Institute of Health today confirmed the increase in coronavirus cases in the country. A total of 6 Italian regions are considered at high risk, 14 at moderate risk and only one is estimated to be at low risk.

In Sicily, 15.5% of hospital beds are for patients with covid-19 and in the small north-western region of Valle d’Aosta, the rate is 15.3%. Last week, nationally, 310 cases per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded, while the previous week the cases were 222 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Rt index over the last seven days averaged 0.83, while last week it was 0.75.

At the same time, a statement by the Italian Deputy Minister of Health, Andrea Costa, caused a sensation, according to which “in the coming weeks, it is very likely that the mandatory isolation for the citizens who have been diagnosed positive in the coronavirus will be abolished”. The Italian Undersecretary added that “attention is definitely needed”, but this will be another step towards treating Covid-19 as an endemic disease.

Officials of the Italian Medical Association stressed, however, that before such a step is taken, the competent authorities should assess the whole situation very carefully and not rush into hasty decisions.
