Italy: Historical negative record of people living in absolute poverty

According to the latest data from the Italian Institute of Statistics Istat, 5,600,000 people in Italy live in absolute poverty. These are essentially 1,900,000 families. Istat emphasizes that “essentially, the negative record and the difficulties of 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic broke out, are confirmed”.

The report from the country’s statistical institute states that rising inflation has caused new difficulties for households already facing financial problems.

At the same time, 14.2% of Italy’s minors live in absolute poverty, while the corresponding percentage in the total population is 9.4%. The differences based on geographical areas are also confirmed: the southern regions of the country “suffer” clearly more than the Italian north, where one can see a certain improvement of the whole situation.

22% of families with three or more children face financial problems, compared to 8.2% of families with only one child.
