According to the consumer association Assoutenti, Italian households will spend up to 38.5 billion euros more this year than in 2021, due to rising energy and fuel prices.
“The costs that businesses have to face are ultimately paid for by citizens, as we saw in January,” said Assoutenti president Fabio Troutzi.
It has been estimated that every Italian family will have to spend 1,480 euros more than last year, but it is not ruled out that this amount may increase over the months. “The whole situation will have a huge impact on the daily lives of citizens, who will be forced to drastically reduce their overall consumption of goods,” Troutzi added.
According to the Italian media, in January, inflation on an annual basis reached 4.8%, the highest rate since 1996. Finally, in the same month, food items increased – always on an annual basis – by 3 , 8%.
