Italy: “If I can meet Putin, I will ask him for a ceasefire,” said Salvini

The secretary of the Lega party, Matteo Salvini, spoke today about the possibility of going to Moscow, to which he referred, for the first time, on Friday.

“For now, I can say that I will be in Rome tonight and that I will decide what to do next. If I can meet with Putin, I will ask him for a ceasefire. At the same time, I would like to go to Kyiv. “to meet Zelensky,” said Salvini. He added that “it should be ascertained whether this trip can, from a practical point of view, take place immediately or in the future”.

According to the press, the Italian technocrat Prime Minister Mario Draghi is said to have been annoyed by the intention of the leader of the League to go to Moscow. Because, mainly, the government of Rome (in which the League participates) these days is trying to develop a mediation effort, in order to be able to export, from Ukraine, tons of wheat that remain closed in warehouses.

Matteo Salvini, for his part, did little to “hysterical reactions, mainly from the left, after the announcement of his attempt to meet with Vladimir Putin.” The Italian newspaper “La Repubblica”, however, reminds that Lega, in the past, had “dangerously flirted” with the party of the Russian president and it would be good, therefore, in the dramatic phase we live in, to keep some useful “safety distances”. .
