This year, at Italy A new explosion of arrivals was recorded: From January 1st to August 20th, 35,034 arrived in the country Immigrants and refugees.
Last year during the corresponding period, arrivals according to the Italian Ministry of Interior were 17,160. In 2019 they had not exceeded 4,580.
Lega secretary Matteo Salvini joins his party in the Draghi government but accuses Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgeze of mishandling and insists that “Italy is not Europe’s refugee camp”. “Arrivals have indeed increased. “But we have to take into account the whole international reality, which is constantly changing, as happened these days with Afghanistan,” Lamorjeze replied.
According to many observers, the government of Mario Draghi, which enjoys a wide range of political support, is facing a major problem with immigration and refugees. “It’s the Achilles heel of the ruling coalition because the various parties cannot find a common ground and Europe is failing to share burdens and responsibilities,” La Repubblica reported. The situation, however, is still manageable due to the ever-new problems posed, daily, by the coronavirus pandemic.
As far as Afghanistan is concerned, finally in the reactions of the Italians so far, solidarity and sorrow prevail for what their people are facing and will face in the future. Many worry, however, that migration flows may increase again – relatively soon.
In the meantime there was a new shipwreck west of Sicily. An immigrant has lost his life, while the Italian financial police and the carabinieri managed to save five people.
It happened off the small island of Levancho south of Trapani in Sicily. The migrants had set sail from Tunisia and rescue operations began as soon as the Italian Coast Guard’s operations center received a call for help from one of the shipwrecked. At the same time, the carabinieri located on the island of Levanzo, another 17 Tunisians who had managed to reach the coast.
