Italy: Impact of the reduction on gas supply from Russia

The Italian press refers to the possible consequences after today’s decision of Gazprom to reduce the supply of natural gas to Italy by 15%.

According to many observers, this move may be connected with the visit – which is likely to take place tomorrow – of the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, together with the French President Emanuel Macron and the German Chancellor Olaf Solz, in Kyiv. An attempt to put pressure, that is, due to the Italian position, in favor of an open and unwavering support of Ukraine.

At the same time, the Rome newspaper Il Messaggero emphasizes that it must be determined whether this reduction in gas supply will be temporary, or will continue for several weeks. According to the newspaper, in the second case, there may be problems in storing gas for the winter.

“In terms of the storage process, we are a little above the European average, but lower than last year. I still remain optimistic,” said Claudio Descalci, CEO of the Italian Hydrocarbon Company. , Eni.

According to the newspaper La Repubblica, also at this stage, the supply of gas in Italy exceeds demand. The first reaches 200 million cubic meters and the second does not exceed 160. “The Moscow move, however, can be interpreted as a warning message to the whole of Europe: that even if, at present, there are no practical consequences, this could happen in the future, the newspaper adds.

According to many Italian analysts, finally, the reduction of gas exports to Italy and Germany, has a purely economic goal: to increase, again, the price of gas in European markets.
