Italy: In Lombardy, Micron detects 40% of new cases, 28% nationally

Today, 44,595 cases of coronavirus were recorded in Italy and 168 people lost their lives. This is the highest number of cases since the outbreak of the pandemic. In total, 901,450 diagnostic tests were performed, 4.9% of which were positive.

There are 1,023 patients in the intensive care units of the country, while there are 8,722 in the hospital wards. Since the beginning of the pandemic, in Italy the infections are 5,517,054 and 136,245 deaths.

Nationwide, the Omicron variant accounts for 28% of new infections.

It is characteristic that in the wider region of Milan, Lombardy, in 40% of the new cases the Omicron variant was detected. In this area, as in all of Italy, pharmacies are under enormous pressure at this time, because more and more people want to do a diagnostic test for Christmas Eve. In many cases, the queue is longer than two hours.
