Italy is aging faster than other EU countries

THE population her Italy It has fallen under 59 million inhabitants and the country is aging at a much faster rate than the rest of the EU member statesthe national statistical agency Istat announced today.

A shrinking and aging population is a serious concern for a stagnant economy like Italy’s, as it is linked to declining productivity, less innovation and higher welfare costs, among other things.

“As of January 1, 2022, according to preliminary data, the population of permanent residents has decreased to 58.983 million,” Istat president Giancarlo Blunzardo told the Rome parliament.

Blanjardo, a distinguished expert on demography, said that the national population has been steadily shrinking since 2014 with total losses since then of over 1.36 million inhabitants.

“The demographic picture of our country is characterized by a significant increase in life expectancy and a correspondingly significant decrease in the birth rate, which results in the population aging faster than in the rest of Europe,” he said.

In September, as APE-MPE notes, Istat has predicted that Italy is at risk of losing almost a fifth of its inhabitants, with its population expected to decrease, based on a normal scenario, from 59.2 million in 2021 to 54.2 million in 2050 and 47.7 in 2070.

Prime Minister Meloni’s government has made it a priority to reverse this trend and in the 2023 budget proposed to reduce taxes on the sale of baby care products and increase child welfare benefits.
