Italy: ‘It is the most crucial match in our history’, says centrist Carlo Calenda

Carlo Calenda, head of the centrist Azione (Action) party, said today that the elections on September 25 will be “the most decisive contest from a social, political and cultural point of view that Italy has ever experienced”.

“With the victory of the extreme right, the League and Berlusconi, our country is in danger of being on the side of Hungary and Russia. It is no coincidence that the executives of the most “enlightened” wing of Forza Italia left the party,” added Kalenda.

Based on the various opinion polls, Azione, at this stage gathers around 6% of the voting intention. Carlo Calenda described his political strength as “a party with a clear European vision, a liberal orientation and a clear stance in favor of the Atlantic Alliance”. It has not yet been decided whether Azione will contest the elections independently or if it will ally with a center-left party.

Mara Carfania, minister responsible for the Italian South, who left Forza Italia and is now on Calenda’s side, underlined at the same time that “whoever caused the fall of the Draghi government, did it only for petty political calculations and benefits”.

“In my new party, now, no one will think of setting up an alliance with Russia or China. None of us will ally with Orban and ask for the creation of a new, huge public debt,” Karfania added.
