The counting of votes in yesterday’s municipal elections in Italy confirmed the first exit polls. The cities of L’Aquila, Palermo and Genoa elected a center-right mayor in the first round.
A second round will be held in Parma and Verona, with the center-left taking the lead, while in Catanzaro, Calabria, ballot boxes will be set up again on June 26, with the Conservative coalition mayoral candidate taking the lead.
In the “city of the Arena”, the count is preceded by the former football player of Roma and the National Team of Italy, Diamiano Tomasi, a candidate for mayor of the progressive forces.
Italian political analysts point out that the center-right alliance in these local elections managed to win the largest cities. There is, of course, an issue of “internal management of victory”: almost all over the country, the first force of the alliance emerges the super-conservative “Brothers of Italy”, Georgia Meloni. The second party of the center-right is the League, and only third is Berlusconi’s Forza Italia.
Which means that in the run-up to next spring’s parliamentary elections, a political force that is often characterized by strong Euroscepticism is gaining strength.
As for the progressive alliance, there is clear skepticism. The center-left alliance with the Five Star Movement did not work, and the leader of the “Five Stars” and former prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, very soon risks facing loud internal controversy. He recently announced that “an effective dialogue with the center-left will continue”, but added that “tomorrow he will announce a substantial, internal reorganization of the political force he leads”.
