Italy: Large decrease in tourists due to coronavirus

Italy’s travel agents are extremely disappointed with this year, despite expectations that had been met before the summer.

Due to restrictions and bans due to the coronavirus epidemic, according to the trade association Confcommercio, in 2021 60 million fewer tourists visited Italy than in 2019. At the same time, Italians who went abroad for tourism, decreased by 13 million.

As for Christmas and New Year, 25 million Italians had originally planned to go on holiday. So far, however, the cancellations have exceeded 5 million, while 5.3 million citizens have reduced the total duration of their trip.

So far, only 5% of those who decided to “escape” from their place of residence, chose to go abroad, while 60% remained within its region.

Tour operators are asking the Draghi government for emergency financial support, while hoteliers and restaurants are making the same request. Due to the latest restrictive measures, indoor celebrations are prohibited. Consequently, there will be few Italians who decide to celebrate the coming of the new year away from home.
